Roman
Artwork Description
Portrait bust of an old man, subject unknown, but originally thought to be of Cicero. The grey marble base is inscribed M T C, for Marcus Tulius Cicero. Later scholarship has identified a Roman bust with a Roman inscription identifying it as Cicero and it looks nothing like this man. However it is a first rate example of Roman late Republican style portraiture. It manages to be both realistic and Idealized.
