This expressive and frightening fanged monster mask is a sash buckle from the Eastern Han Dynasty 25 - 220 A.D. Strongly influenced by Indian imagery it also has features of the earlier Archaic Chinese style. Very finely carved in three dimensions it is an exceptional and powerful miniature sculpture.
