Jorge Mayet
Artwork Description
In Untitled (2025), Jorge Mayet presents a suspended tree that, unlike other works in the series, maintains an appearance of stability at the surface while revealing a condition of extreme fragility beneath. The tree rises with a lush green canopy, resting on a floating fragment of land that seems sufficient to sustain life, yet its entire root system is exposed and hanging in the void. The roots extend outward in a delicate network, carrying fragments of soil that signal loss, detachment, and ongoing erosion. What traditionally anchors the tree to the ground is here rendered vulnerable and fragmented, calling into question notions of rootedness and permanence. The work establishes a clear tension between visible vitality and the precarious structure that supports it. Through the use of metal wire, cold porcelain, polyurethane, synthetic fibers, and acrylic paint, Mayet constructs an artificial landscape that foregrounds the dependency between surface and subsurface. The tree functions not merely as a natural form, but as a living system conditioned by territorial instability. The work invites reflection on ecosystem fragility, soil loss, and the persistence of life within environments where balance remains inherently provisional.
