Jorge Mayet
Artwork Description
In Untitled (2025), Jorge Mayet presents a suspended tree whose root system is fully exposed, stripping the landscape of any illusion of stability. The work depicts a floating fragment of land from which a tree with an intense red canopy emerges, sustained by a network of roots hanging in midair, carrying fragments of soil as remnants of a territory undergoing erosion. The contrast between the chromatic vitality of the foliage and the structural fragility of the roots introduces a tension between life, memory, and precarity. Roots—traditionally hidden beneath the surface—become the central focus, revealing both what sustains life and what is gradually disintegrating. The tree is not firmly anchored; it survives in a condition of permanent suspension. Through the use of metal wire, cold porcelain, polyurethane, synthetic fibers, and acrylic paint, Mayet constructs an artificial topography that underscores the notion of uprooting. The work reflects on ecosystem fragility, soil loss, and the rupture between surface and subsurface. The landscape is no longer a natural backdrop, but a vulnerable body in which life persists despite the instability that supports it.
