Jorge Rosano Gamboa
Artwork Description
"Sikuamecha" is a word in Purépecha referring to a sorcerer - whether good or bad - who possesses the ability to transform into an animal or another person. This avocado wood mask, originally carved by artisans in Tocuaro (Michoacán), was abandoned in a workshop, until it was reclaimed by Jorge Rosano Gamboa. Using the traditional yakisugi burning technique and adding obsidian eyes, the artist has breathed new life into the piece - reviving memory through matter.
