Artwork Description

Eduardo Sarabia's Narcomantas are narrative tapestries that reframe the visual codes of drug trafficking into an artistic language imbued with cultural complexity. This work documents the actual practice of hanging narco-banners as a means of communication with the population and reinterprets it through its materiality and antagonistic messages. His pieces transform the banners into wool tapestries, woven and treated by hand in collaboration with traditional artisans. The violent messages are replaced by positive affirmations that invite the viewer to reconsider which narratives are made invisible and which are celebrated in our visual culture. In this act of translation, he transforms the ephemeral and violent into a contemplative object for reflection.
