Alicja Kwade
Artwork Description
Gravitational waves were detected in 2015, 100 years after Albert Einstein's prediction, validating a significant aspect of his general theory of relativity and ushering in a remarkable new era of exploration into the cosmos. Gravitational waves are waves of the intensity of gravity that are generated by an accelerated mass. In Alicja Kwade's "100 days," the accelerated mass is depicted by watch-hands on paper, transforming gravitational waves into a temporal dimension. Each hand represents one hour within a period of 100 days, radiating outward like waves from their origin. The watch-hands that typically govern our daily routine, no longer indicate the correct time as we know it. A familiar order is replaced by a new system, challenging both our sense of time and our understanding of the world. Kwade's representation enables time to be understood in every direction, portraying time as a nonlinear dimension.
