Jorge Mayet
Artwork Description
In Untitled (2025), Jorge Mayet presents a suspended tree that embodies an image of apparent vitality sustained by a deeply unstable structure. The lush green canopy rises naturally from a small floating fragment of land, while below it an extremely delicate and fragmented root system extends into the void, carrying remnants of soil that appear to be gradually falling away. The work challenges traditional notions of rootedness. What sustains life—the roots—is not firmly anchored but exposed, vulnerable, and in a state of erosion. The landscape is revealed as a fragile body, where the surface conceals a critical condition that only becomes visible beneath. Mayet shifts the viewer’s attention toward what is usually hidden, turning the subsurface into a central narrative space. Through the use of metal wire, cold porcelain, polyurethane, synthetic fibers, and acrylic paint, the artist constructs an artificial topography that emphasizes the dependency between life and territory. The tree is not presented as a symbol of stability, but as a form of precarious resistance, sustained by a provisional balance. The work invites reflection on ecosystem fragility, soil erosion, and the persistence of life amid continuous loss.
