Artwork Description
STREAMS (short for surrounding trans-dimensional realities experienced as mutable sentience) cartographs not continents, but currents – the swirling vortices of experience we navigate. STREAMS is a pilgrimage of sorts to the hidden springs of the human experience. An exploration of the subtle currents between perceived realities and states of consciousness. The entoptic paintings series —entos (inside) and opsis (seeing)— started with the intention of depicting the blurred and uncertain reality we experience. The softness of the atmospheres from afar contrasted with the crisp multicoloured grain the paintings have when inspected up close. The entoptic paintings are meditations on the inward and subjective nature of the human experience. It’s the I in the eye, our nature interferes continuously on the reality we perceive. Our embodied consciousness co-creates all that we perceive; it’s us looking through a window only to find our distorted reflection on the glass. In STREAMS I see each fragment in the paintings as a particular state of being, or particular reality within the multiverse. Some fragments have some sort of continuity between them, others have clear cuts, some particles float in several fragments at the same time… There are currents, motion and a sense of fluidity. As Evan Thopmson writes in “Waking, Dreaming, Being: Self and Consciousness in Neuroscience, Meditation, and Philosophy” -Like a fish swimming back and forth between the banks of a wide river, we alternate between waking and dreaming. Yet the self never attaches fully to either state, as the fish never touches the riverbanks when it swims between them. I think of STREAMS as a bardo not of death, but of being. Ever-flowing, ever-changing.
