Alicja Kwade
Artwork Description
At the center of the work is a bronze chair whose seat is blocked by a rough boulder, or whose balance and grounding are destabilized by a massive stone. The raw, natural structure of the rock forms a powerful contrast to the clear, human-made form of the chair. This juxtaposition raises questions of balance, load-bearing capacity, and stability—both literally and metaphorically. In this work, Kwade combines two fundamental materials: bronze, as a symbol of cultural permanence, and stone, shaped over millions of years by geological processes. Their combination points to different dimensions of time and opens a dialogue between civilization and nature, between transience and endurance. With its aesthetic force and conceptual depth, the work invites reflection on weight and balance, on the relationship between humans and their environment, and on the fluid boundaries between artwork and functional object.
