The Color and Light, made beginning in 2014, are an evolution of the work Pistoletto began in 2008 with performances in which large framed mirrors are broken. The Color and Light consist of one or more framed mirrors, part of whose mirror surface is removed, manually cutting parts of the mirror following a pattern traced by the artist and allowing the underlying colored jute canvas to emerge. The dynamic between a fixed image, constituted by the colored canvas, and the changing reflected images produced on the mirror surface, re-proposes that which exists in the Mirror Paintings between fixed image of photographic nature and reflected images produced on the mirror surface. In some Color and Light made since 2017, Pistoletto will also insert parts of black mirror, which was initially used only in the earlier works of the Black and Light series. “[Color and Light] is a work of broken mirrors but executed in an orderly manner. The outlines produced by breaking the mirror itself are included in the mirror, and these outlines form a puzzle. The large mirror is broken and each piece takes on its own individuality. The universal figure of the mirror divides and multiplies with the breaking and cutting, becoming an innumerable quantity of single figures. Each fragment of the mirror can be considered as a person who is part of a larger mirror, that is, society. Society is like a big mirror.” (M. Pistoletto)
