William Gaber
Artwork Description
130 pieces of 23 x 35.5 cm each "Frontera" / "Border". "Border" is a painting by William Gaber depicting a wall from the artist’s studio in Yucatán, Mexico. As in many of his works, Gaber employs architectural elements to symbolize the normalization of imaginary borders—whether political, ideological, or personal. The underlying concept of this body of work is to question the effectiveness of borders and to reveal their artificial nature. These “walls” suggest ideas of separation, filters, and imposed differences, while simultaneously highlighting the natural permeability of culture, language, and customs. Ultimately, the work reflects the human condition as that of an adaptable social being, far less divided or different from each other than we often choose to believe. —William Gaber
