Ana Leovy
Artwork Description
Piece from the TERTULIA collection: The word tertulia refers to an old custom tied to informal gathering, present in different contexts across Mexico as a form of everyday encounter. More than an event, it names a mode of togetherness that unfolds without a specific purpose. From this perspective, the act of sharing food functions as a concrete practice of building bonds. Sitting at the table, cooking for others, offering a toast, dancing, or sustaining a long conversation are forms of affective organization in which the body takes an active role. Listening, observing, and being present constitute the most ancient form of collective care—a way of producing belonging. Ana Leovy’s work insists on something elemental: that art does not need to justify itself, but simply to appear. Painting, for her, is a way of being in the world without hardening it. Painting sustains life in its deeper continuity. Ana Leovy’s painting invites us to remain. In TERTULIA, painting takes shape as a breathing presence, where color acts as a living matter nourished by ordinary scenes—shared time. Within Ana’s imaginary, color emerges as a means of transcending memory and narrative. Her figuration, situated between the recognizable and the open, resists fixed, individual identity. The bodies that appear in her work do not respond to normative frameworks; they present themselves as available, inclusive, and porous presences.
