Artwork Description

This table stands as a key work of Mexican modernism, a movement that consciously diverged from the rationalist and functionalist strains of international modernism. In Mexico, modern design embraced formal density, symbolism, and material expression as central values. Executed on a bronze base and finished with hand-set Byzantine mosaic, the work draws directly from the image of the Maquizcóatl, the pre-Hispanic double-headed serpent, reinterpreted through a modernist lens rather than as a literal quotation. Designed by Antonio Ferreni, the piece reflects the fertile convergence of European modernist training and Mexico’s symbolic visual traditions, resulting in a language that is both modern and deeply rooted in place.
